Closest Airport to Zion National Park

The closest airport is not the one most people use

St. George Regional Airport (SGU) is the closest airport to Zion National Park. It is about 47 miles from the park's main entrance at Springdale, roughly an hour by car.

Yet most visitors land in Las Vegas, two and a half hours away. That sounds odd until you look at the flights. St. George has a handful of routes on small regional jets. Las Vegas has nonstops from nearly everywhere, usually for much less.

So the honest answer has two parts. St. George is closest. Las Vegas is the one most people should price first. Which one is right for you depends on what the rest of your trip looks like.

If you want the shortest drive: St. George (SGU)

St. George is a small, calm airport where you can be in your rental car 15 minutes after landing. United, American and Delta all fly there, but only from their hubs:

  • Denver and Los Angeles on United, plus Chicago in summer (May to August)
  • Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth on American
  • Salt Lake City on Delta

If you live in one of those cities, book it and enjoy the easy day. From anywhere else you will connect, and the last leg is on a regional jet with few seats. That is why fares are often $100 to $200 higher than Las Vegas. On a short trip the saved driving can still be worth it.

If you want the cheapest fare: Las Vegas (LAS)

Las Vegas is about 165 miles from Springdale. The drive is easy: I-15 north the whole way, then Highway 9 from Hurricane into the park.

Two things catch people out. First, Nevada is on Pacific time and Utah is on Mountain time, so you lose an hour driving to Zion. A 2 pm landing means reaching Springdale around 7 pm, not 6. Second, the stretch through the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona is narrow and often has roadworks. Leave slack on the way back to your flight.

Rental cars in Las Vegas are usually cheaper as well, because so many companies compete there.

If you are seeing Kolob Canyons or Bryce too: Cedar City (CDC)

Cedar City is about an hour north of Springdale and only 20 minutes from Kolob Canyons, the quiet corner of Zion most visitors skip. It also puts you closer to Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks.

The catch is the schedule. Service is a couple of Delta flights a day from Salt Lake City, so it only works as a connection. Check it if Delta is your airline. Otherwise skip it.

If Zion is one stop on a Utah road trip: Salt Lake City (SLC)

Salt Lake City is about 310 miles and four and a half hours from Zion. Nobody should fly there just for Zion.

It makes sense when you are driving a loop through Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion. A good version is to fly into Salt Lake City, drive south through the parks, and fly home from Las Vegas. One-way car rental costs extra, but you never repeat a road.

Do you need a car once you are there?

Less than you might think. For most of the year, from early March to late November, private cars are not allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive at all. Everyone rides the free park shuttle to the trailheads. A second free shuttle runs through Springdale.

That means a car is for getting to Springdale, not for getting around Zion. If you stay in Springdale, you can park it and forget it. There is also a public bus, SunTran, between St. George and Springdale. Shuttle companies run from the Las Vegas and St. George airports too.

I would still rent a car if you plan to see Kolob Canyons, the east side of the park, or Bryce. None of those have a shuttle.

How to decide in two minutes

Search your dates into both SGU and LAS. Then do the sum per person. Las Vegas costs you about three extra hours of driving over the round trip, plus fuel. If St. George is within about $75 a ticket, take St. George. If the gap is bigger, or you are traveling as a family, Las Vegas usually wins. If your dates can move a day or two, flexible dates often change the answer.

One more tip. Parking at the Zion visitor center fills early in the morning. If you land late in Las Vegas, sleep in St. George or Hurricane and drive in at sunrise instead of arriving tired at midnight.
